Vacation Bebop / Vacation Rocksteady Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)Now that we're in September, summer is drawing to a close, bringing an end to hot weather and beach vacations and resuming school and college for many a young man. Despite this, NECA has been able to preserve the summer spirit for a bit longer with another release of Bebop and Rocksteady. They already filled their quota of the two for the year with an updated reissue of the standard two-pack, but now… remember when I talked about Colossus Napoleon and how I hoped the B&R outfits on the box art would become figures? Well, my wish has been granted! It seems like these guys get different sculptors whenever they get new figures now, and Tony Cipriano and Tomasz Rozejowski are responsible for them this time. While the heads Paul Harding did for the superhero versions matched the cartoon more than Trevor Zammit's sculpts for the basic versions, these are a huge step up from both. The head shapes remind me a bit more of Zammit's sculpts, including how the jaws are engineered, blending in with the sculpts better than Harding's work. Bebop has sculpted fur on the cheeks and neck, but they aren't as flat-looking as Mighty Hog. While Rocksteady has a neutral, somewhat grumpy expression, Bebop has a bit of a smile, making for a joyful mutant warthog. Again, these aren't basic versions, but rather the outfits they wore in "Napoleon Bonafrog: Colossus of the Swamps" while in Florida as part of Shredder's scheme of the day. Both are wearing sunglasses, with Rocksteady having eyes sculpted behind them. Bebop, however, does not, with excess plastic connecting the glasses to the head, so I guess they didn't bother with him. He does have a goofy duck hat with a beanie propellor, and the propellor is a separate piece in the box, as to reduce fears of breakage. You'll have to heat up the socket in the hat to pop it in, however. The paint is clean on both heads with minimal slop or bleed (these are stocked in large numbers, making it easy to pick out the best one), though there's no cel shading, and with easy release that doesn't have it, it feels more and more like NECA is no longer doing it. Both henchmen have a unique outfit, lifted right from the episode. Bebop wears a yellow t-shirt, floral shorts with suspenders, and shoes with long socks, while Rocksteady has a Hawaiian shirt, rolled-up jeans, and sandals. Bottom line, the outfits look great, thanks to the clean edges and lines, and while there's a few flaws, it's acceptable enough for the figures. However, the knee joints for Bebop throw off the look of the legs a bit, since the tan pins going through the knees clash with the edges of the shorts and socks. While these were likely sculpted before NECA started doing pinless joints, such joints would've been better for him. At least with Rocksteady, the pant cuffs are sculpted over the lower pins, making for a more seamless look. Speaking of Rocksteady, his lei necklace is removable, and the head pops off easily to do so. Without the propellor, Bebop stands 6 1/2" tall, while Rocksteady is more at the 6" mark. The articulation isn't much different from previous figures of the pair, as both have a barbell head and chest (hidden under the shirts), swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, ball-jointed hips, double-hinged elbows and knees, swivel biceps and thighs, and of course, hinged jaws. There's some tightness to some of the joints, such as the biceps and knees, and Bebop's jaw feels like it doesn't really want to move, but these guys move well overall. Even with the shirts over them, the chests have plenty of movement, and the elbows and knees can manage a surprisingly deep bend. The knees can't go fully straight, however, so they're stuck in a semi-squat position. At least the hips and ankles work well enough for deep stances. There's not a lot of accessories here, but they too are lifted from the same episode, and go great with these designs. Three sets of hands - splayed, closed, and gripping - are included for both of them, and swap with no issues. There's also cameras for the two to wear over their necks, and a shoulder bag for Bebop. Rocksteady has two hats to wear, a sun visor and a taxi driver's cap, and there's what seems to be a cooler bag for the pair to carry. The bag can be held no issue, but the hats only rest of Rocksteady's head, with nothing holding them onto his scalp. Lastly, there's the mutated bug from the episode, with big wings, tiny arms, and a rhino horn. Again, not much, but it'll make for a nice display. I assume we all saw this set coming sooner or later, but it's a pretty great one at that, and I imagine these outfits will be a fan-favorite. I look forward to seeing what other versions of Bebop and Rocksteady we could get, but "ultimate" versions using the same likenesses here and more episodic accessories would be fun as well. - 9/10/24 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
