Dirk Savage and Mona Lisa Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - Classic Cartoon (Neca)NECA's making our turtle dreams come true with two fan-favorite one-shots in one set. Dirk Savage only appeared in one episode, season 7's "Dirk Savage: Mutant Hunter!", where he was employed to hunt mutants (duh) under orders of A.J. Howard, unaware his employer was actually a mutant planning to use the captured mutants in an old-fashioned take over the world scheme. He was a pretty cool character, to say the least, what with all his traps and all, and his gear has been included with a few previous figures, meaning his arrival in the line was inevitable. I have no idea who sculpted Dirk, since there's a lot of people credited for this set, but he looks spot-on. The head is great, with a chiseled jaw and expressive open-mouth look, though his hair isn't as messy as in the show. Standing around 6 3/4" tall, Dirk is a pretty buff guy, and his outfit is peppered with straps, belts, and other accessories. The shoulder pads are made out of a softer plastic to prevent them from hindering arm movement, and the straps and belt on his chest are as well. Don't think they have to be, but it's okay. The paint is very good on him, with only a few barely-noticeable blips. Dirk sports some great articulation, with ball-jointed head, neck, and chest, swivel/hinge shoulders, wrists, and ankles, swivel biceps, waist, and thighs, double-hinged elbows and knees, and ball/socket hips. The elbows, wrists, and knees are pretty tight out of the box, and heat will be needed to get them moving, but other than that, he can manage some great poses. The head in particular has a lot of range, aided by an extra joint at the base of the neck. As a mutant hunter for-hire, Dirk needs a lot of equipment to do his job. He comes with two different laser guns, the larger of them fitting into a holster that plugs into the back. The baton (at least what it's called in the product description) also clips onto the holster, but it can take some work to get it into the hands. There's also a foot trap, with a different sculpt from the one that came with Rasputin and Genghis, a platform for it, and very tech-y handcuffs. Dirk also has three sets of hands - closed, gripping, and gun grip - that swap with little resistance. The other character here is Mona Lisa, who made her sole appearance in "Raphael Meets his Match." Standing around 6" tall, the student-turned-humanoid-lizard looks very nice, though the head could use a little touching up. She actually gets two heads: one neutral, and one ticked off. All Mona wears is a hairband, a scarf, and a belt. I guess being a giant lizard means you don't need to be modest. The paint on her is very solid, with no noticeable fuzzy edges or bleed. She moves similar to Dirk, but with no movement at the neck or chest, a ball-jointed waist instead of a swivel one, and a ball/socket tail. Her thigh and ankle swivels refuse to budge for me, ever after plenty of hot water and the freezer trick. I feel the issue, at least for the ankles, is similar to the Pizza Monster, where the pegs are too big for the sockets to allow for movement. For accessories, Mona gets the alternate head I already mentioned, but the heads fit on the ball very tightly, so you'll need some heat to pop them on and off. She also gets four pairs of hands - webbed, style pose, gripping, and closed - but there's much more resistance to swapping them than with Dirk. The chemistry equipment fits with the character, as IIRC, it's what caused Mona's transformation. There's a round beaker with a stand and a removable cork, a beaker with a curly straw, and a test tube holder with three removable test tubes. Rounding things out are two textbooks, and while they don't open up, they look very nice. While this set has a few issues, especially the stuck joints on Mona, it's still nice to finally get these two in the line. I enjoy getting these unique, one-shot characters in figure form, and I hope NECA keeps it up. - 4/25/23 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
