Future Spawn (Deluxe Figure) (Spawn) Review
Future Spawn (Deluxe Figure)
Spawn (McFarlane)It's weirder than it looks.
Having bought this deluxe figure, some 26 years old now, from a revolutionary toyline, for ten bucks in package, I knew it wasn't exactly in the top 10 for the line. But anxious for a cheap dose of nostalgia, I couldn't resist. It's certainly unusual, I'll give it that.
First, the good. It looks nice at a glance, if rather oddly proportioned. The usual assortment of spikes/hooked edges and a nice desaturated red tie it to Spawn without looking at all like we're used to. The thin left arm warrants a double take, but blends in fine if only half extended. Paint is tight for the most part. The way the targeting system ends up over the face as the armor is lifted is a stroke of genius.
On the other end of the scale, there's the articulation. There's plenty there, it's just laid out strangely. Full ball joints at the right shoulder and hip, swivels on the left. Knees with no ankles make it hard to get him out of a drastic squat. The left shoulder is mounted sideways on a post coming out the top of the hip, with a sideways elbow joint handling vertical movent.
I can't complain too hard about the action features. A missile launcher is a given at this price point, and while it's a bit oversized (with an absurdly plain-looking butt end), I can dig it. The extendo-arm feels oddly thin when extended.
This one's a mixed bag, really. It'll definitely stand out wherever you put it, but it's just so bizarre to handle, and ultimately there are precious few poses it can pull off. Buy it if you like bizarre things and the price is right, but don't expect greatness.
