During the epic Secret Wars, Spider-Man acquired a wondrous new black costume that enhanced his already amazing abilities. He soon discovered that the costume was actually an alien life form that was attempting to merge with his body permanently. Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four used a sonic blaster to sever the symbiote's connection with the web slinger and trapped it in a special container. Desperate for a new host, the alien would eventually merge with rival newspaper photographer Eddie Brock and become his most horrific arch villain, the alien symbiote known as Venom!
