Starfleet is the deep-space exploration, diplomatic and defensive institution of the United Federation of Planets. Officers typically must graduate a rigorous training program at Starfleet Academy. The Academy's motto is Ex astris, scientia - "From the starts, knowledge". Graduates are usually assigned to service aboard a starship, space station or other observation post. By the late 24th Century, Starfleet ships and officers have explored only a small part of the Alpha Quadrant. After the discovery of the wormhole near Bajor, Starfleet officers explore the Gamma Quadrant as well, although they must be careful not to run afoul of the shapeshifting Founders. Starfleet's official motto is to "boldly go where no one has gone before"
