Lt. Cmdr. Benjamin Sisko was executive officer on the U.S.S. Saratoga when it was destroyed in battle with the Borg at Wolf 359 in 2367. Sisko's wife Jennifer was lost, but their son Jake survived. Sisko was reassigned to the Starfleet shipyards on Utopia Planitia, where he served for nearly three years.
In 2369, the Cardassians withdrew from Bajor, leaving behind a space station quickly commandeered by the Bajorans. The station was designated Deep Space Nine. Sisko was promoted to Commander and assigned to help the Bajorans rebuild their world. His long-range goal is to bring Bajor into the Federation.
Bajoran religious leaders believe that Sisko is the "Emissary" foretold by prophecy, a role he detests. Sisko was promoted to Captain in 2371.
