The Borg are a race of cybernetically enhanced humanoids who originated in the Delta Quadrant. Their electronic and mechanical implants are designed to give them superior technological and combat capabilities. The Borg are linked through a subspace communications network called the Collective. This gives them the ability to think and adapt to change at a rate far beyond human capacity.

The first Federation contact with the Borg came in 2365, when the U.S.S. Enterprise confronted one of their cube-shaped ships in System J-25. In early 2367, the Borg nearly conquered Earth, destroying 40 Starfleet ships at Wolf 359. Another attack on Earth in 2372 was stopped by Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E. For Picard, who had once been altered by the Borg into a creature called Locutus, this victory helped him to overcome the nightmares that had long haunted him.
